A peduncle throw is one of the most explosive behaviors a humpback can produce. The entire rear third of a humpback launched clear of the surface, salt still airborne as the ocean takes it back. In Maui's winter waters, this behavior shows up most in surface active groups such as males competing, posturing, pushing. We still do not know if it is a behavior to show aggression, communication, or something else.
